Interests/Activities
If you are interested in trying out some other active pursuits then you have plenty to choose from:

Activity Centre - the Deeside Activity Centre - a fantastic activity centre close to the Running The Highlands base at Lumphanan. Go-karting, Quad biking, 4x4 driving and Archery are all available, along with activities for smaller children and fabulous home cooked food in the coffee shop.

Mountain biking - there are great networks of trails throughout the area and Cycle Highlands in Ballater have an excellent selection of bikes, including full suspension/performance bikes to hire. They also provide repair/maintenance services if you have your own bike with you.

Golf - All abilities are catered for within 10 miles of our base in Lumphanan and club hire available - just click here to link to our page on Golf Courses in the area for more details.

Fishing - some of the best river and loch fishing in the country is available in the immediate area - the famous River Dee salmon fishing is world known.

Gliding - the Deeside Gliding Club operates between Aboyne and Dinnet and accompanied flights can be booked at very reasonable rates.

Hill Walking & Mountain Climbing - the Cairngorms mountain range offers walks and climbs to satisfy any enthusiast.

Skiing and Snowboarding - during winter there are downhill skiing and snowboarding pistes at The Lecht and Glenshee, all withing 30mins drive of most of our accommodation providers. There are also some fantastic cross-country skiing trails in the area.

Ponytrekking - either with the stalking ponies at Balmoral or at Glen Tanar Equestrian Centre near Aboyne, see the area from horseback for a change!

Families and Children - and dogs!ballochbuie neil mark & mads comp.jpg

We can cater for families and children and dogs!! If you wish to visit with your family and/or children, who don't run, there is plenty for them to do too.

Well behaved dogs who are running partners can also be included in nearly all our runs and most of our accommodation providers take pets - please let us know if you wish to bring your 4 legged training partner and we'll do our best to accommodate them!

History

If you are a bit of a history buff or just fancy finding out more about the past in this richly historic area then you will not be short of places to visit.

The region has innumerable historical artefacts, from the earliest habitations of man through the ages of the Picts, Scots and up to modern times. The remains of burial cairns, stone circles and Roman camps are to be found in abundance.

This is also the part of Scotland that boasts the Castle Trail - in view of the many important ancient and more recently built castles located here.

MacBeth- the 11th Century Scottish king made famous for all time by Shakespeare - was killed a few yards from the Running The Highlands base in Lumphanan in the Battle of Lumphanan 15 August 1057. Some of his remains still, alledgedly, lie beneath a cairn near the northern side of the village. The well from which he drank before being defeated, as well as the stone on which he was beheaded, can also be seen near the village.
