June 2006 Weekend Review
kathrine, roger, fiona, mel running.jpg
It is not every day that you get the chance to run side by side and chat with two international marathon legends. Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the marathon competitively and who later went on to win the New York Marathon and Roger Robinson, masters winner of the Boston, NY, Christchurch, Canberra and Vancouver Marathons - joined us for the whole weekend.

In weather conditions which ideally suited off road running in the stunning Higlands scenery, we were treated to a relaxing and yet incredibly inspirational and informative weekend.

roger and kathrine.jpgKathrine and Roger delighted the audience with their fascinating account of the development of endurance running from a mere 17 participants in the first modern Olympics (many in tweeds and cloth caps!) to the phenomenon it is today - tens of thousands of runners in the Flora London Marathon and more and more taking up the sport.

audience.jpgTheir quotes from their new book - "26.2 - Marathon Stories" were enlightening and they both kept the room enthralled as they recounted Kathrine's famous entry into (and near expulsion from!) the Boston Marathon: the event that was to change the face of women's competitive distance running forever.

If that wasn't enough, our resident expert coach, Mel Edwards, was on hand throughout the weekend to offer one to one advice and coaching tips. As one of the guests commented - "Mel Edwards - totally inspiring guy!! He's a star!!!"

Dr Chris Fenn got everyone thinking hard about their eating habits in her interactive presentation on the Sunday about nutrition and hydration. With her wealth of knowledge and experience she gives good impartial advice that some of the guests have already started to act on! Eating for success is her motto and she inspires a positive change in us all!

small Sunday group.jpgPat and Catriona kept tired legs and bodies fresh and helped the whole body unwind and relax with sports massage (and smiles).

Emma gave a Pilates session to introduce core stability exercises to those who hadn't tried them before and challenged those who had to improve on their technique!

Here are some of the comments from our guests:

"Brilliant experience - great people, terrific surroundings, good base."

"Excellent weekend - didn't know what to expect but thorougly enjoyed myself. Lots of lovely, enthusiastic and very helpful people - great running...makes me want to get out there and do it!!...watch this space!"

"A lovely weekend. The opportunity to run with such great people was wonderful. The small, personal touches were appreciated."
