Mad March Marathon Training Weekend with Ron Hill |
'Many thanks again for a fantastic weekend of running, advice, support, good food and excellent company! We had a great time' Alison from Inverness
Sporting legend Ron Hill, who won Marathon Commonwealth Gold in Edinburgh in 1970 with a world beating time of 2:09:28, joined runners from all over the country at Balmoral Castle Estate for our Mad March Marathon Training Weekend.
Over 25 guests enjoyed a weekend of guided runs on the Castle Estate trails, along with expert coaching tips from former international athletes Fraser Clyne and Mel Edwards and nutririon advice from Dr Chris Fenn. Staying at the staff accommodation block at the castle and enjoying specially prepared, locally produced healthy food throughout the weekend, guests also enjoyed sports massage and Pilates from other members of the RTH team and gait analysis/running shoe advice from Nick Taylor of Asics.
We were absolutely delighted to welcome Ron Hill, a sporting hero, to our weekend and hear his unique story - it was an inspiration to us all! Ron Hill has almost clocked up an amazing 150,000 miles running since he started his running log in 1956 (which he brought along for all to see) and has raced in 93 different foreign countries, with an aim of competing in 100 by the age of 70. He still runs every day and loved the runs that he completed during the weekend.
The feedback from our guests has been fantastic - in answer to the question 'Have your expectations of your RTH holiday been met/exceeded/not met?', all our guests stated that their expectations of the weekend were exceeded.
'Many thanks for such a fantastic weekend. You have a super product which coupled with excellent administration, all undertaken with a smile, meant I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The session with Mel was also superb, my training programme being overhauled for my Autumn marathon and generally the encouragement and information provided was of the highest order. Can't also speak highly enough of the running through the trails, especially the 18 miler on Saturday, wonderful! Ron Hill was a revelation, an astonishing man and a huge coup for you to be able to attract such a strong running personality. I have been so encouraged by the weekend to join, at the old age of 58, my local running club in Greenock and my times since the trail runs have already improved. Hopefully will give you some repeat business and again my sincere thanks for a wonderful weekend of running.' Ian from Ayrshire Ron's Top 10 Tips are: - Keep a training log (Ron's is 50 years old)
- Decide how many days/week you can run and stick to it
- Remember it's not 'if' but 'when'
- Vary your routes to make it more interesting and get off road if possible
- Run with friends if you find that helps
- Be comfortable - cool in summer and warm in winter
- If you don't feel like it, promise yourself to start off as slowly as possible
- Have a short term target
- Have a long term target
- Two miles is better than nothing
